MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 25

Everyone ran around searching every nook and crevice for the murderer, but he seemed to have disappeared.

Roha wandered off to the deserted, dilapidated section of the old building.

She walked around the old tapestries, unaware of the lurking threat.

Suddenly someone gripped her from behind, stifling her startled scream effortlessly. She was dragged into the gloom of a nearby room.

She struggled violently, but was no match to the man's muscles.

Suddenly inspiration hit her like a bolt of lightning. She reached for her pepper spray and attacked her assailant.

The man howled in agony and his grip slackened.

Roha took advantage of his momentary weakness and hit him with a rusted old bar that was the only thing nearby. But her parry was slow as the bar was too heavy for her to  lift.

Panting with her efforts, she aimed another blow, but the man caught the bar, holding it firmly.

His hold was pretty strong.Apparently he wasn't weakened at all by the burning and discomfort in his eyes.

The murderer snatched the bar, throwing it away effortlessly.

But they were unaware of the racket they had been creating.

A gun shot echoed in the room and the murderer slumped  groaning in agony.

Roha whirled around to see Commissioner Singhania with his gun levelled, glaring at the murderer.

The goons and their chief were immediately overpowered and the corrupt Sub-Inspector of Jalna was put behind the bars for his trechery.

Antiques costing millions were recovered and Roha,Amish and Kyra instantly became national heroes.

As for the ghost of  Sir Edmund Hathway a projector was found hidden in the bushes near the ancient culvert which narrated its own story.Jalna was free from the terror of the wicked old man that supposedly haunted the place for decades.

Roha,Amish and Kyra are now waiting impatiently for the  bravery award that will be bestowed upon them by the President on 26th January.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 24

Roha and Amish were gagged and tied, surrounded by the goons as their chief prowled before them.

''So,you thought you can hoodwink me and enter my own house, without me knowing did you,you foolish, poking kids?''he growled.

The duo shuddered, hoping that the cops will reach before they were harmed.

''I established my nexus,my business with so much of hardwork then how could I let imbeciles like you ruin it?..I tried to warn you but even that couldn't penetrate that thick skull of yours!''he suddenly leaned forward, clutching Roha.

''Tell me girl, did you think you and you sidekicks could outsmart me?''

Roha flinched, the murderer's foul breath making her squirmish. She gulped the lump that rose to her throat, her brain whizzing.

She needed to buy more time so that the police can reach. But How?she didn't know.

She glanced at Amish who looked equally petrified. She couldn't see a way out. They were smothered and tied with the goons glaring at them like eagles.A sense of total helplessness washed over her.

Roha was more worried and upset for Amish. After all she was the one who had allowed her friends to get involved due to her tenacity.

''But,you shall pay and gravely so.Nobody dares to mess with me!Your death will become another unsolved mystery that this place houses.''The murderer leered, aiming his gun at Roha.

''Good bye Roha Sharma!''

Roha closed her eyes, waiting for the pain.Beside her she could feel Amish struggling wildly to break free, yet she knew she had reached a sticky end.

There was no way out.

A loud  gun shot broke the prevalent silence......

After a few long moments,Roha opened her eyes dazed. She couldn't feel a thing. There was no searing pain. She looked up to see the murderer kneeling on the ground, doubled up with pain.

''Ro!Ami!''someone yelled and her eyes filled up to see Kyra dashing towards them.

''Are you two ok?''she asked frantically, trying to free them.

The room was  thronged by policemen who had overpowered the struggling men.

''Good job kids!I must say you've shown bravery beyond expectations.'' Commissioner Sighania patted them jovially.

''You guys reached on time, otherwise that crazy nutter would've killed Roha!''Amish said shakily.

Roha looked around, trying to catch a glimpse of the murderer who was no where in sight.

''That's all right!But where's their boss?''she frowned.

Everyone turned around. The murderer had disappeared, taking advantage of the chaos.....

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 23

Acting reflexively,Roha pulled Amish in the adjoining ante room. They waited with bated breath as a man entered the hallway and glanced around cautiously.

''There's no one here...must be a stray cat or rat.''He called back.

Roha thanked Heavens profusely. They had avoided being caught just by a few seconds.

The man returned back. The duo peered around and tip-toed after him to reach a dimly lit room.

They hid behind the tattered blinds and listened intently.A rota of men thronged the place and were seated around a huge, chipped table.

''Make arrangements to send some of these baubles to Mumbai next week....We've got a very influential party showing interest.''The man who sat at the head ordered.

''Ok boss!''

''Hmm...and step up the vigil.Nobody should catch the whiff....We've to be especially careful since that prying girl has got the inkling. We can't afford a lackadaisical attitude....not until I take her out.''he leered in a deadly soft voice.

Roha shuddered and took an impromptu step back.

Some dry leaves under her feet crackled loudly. The men looked up.

''Probably the wind.''The chief murmured, staring intently at the place where they stood.

''That's all for today.Let's go!''he added after a pause. The men stared at each other bewildered, the chief had called them merely for this information. It didn't tally at all with their previous dealings, but all the same they filed out without a word.

The kingpin followed their suit, pootling off insolently, feeling smug.

As soon as they went out of sight,Roha and Amish entered the room quitely and reached out for numerous crates stacked there.

''Oh my....''Roha gasped stunned.

The crates had some of the most magnificent antiques they had ever laid there eyes on.

''These must cost a fortune!''Amish whispered hoarsely, lifting an old, guilded  statue.

''They've been using this place to hide these stolen treasures and those grottoes to transport them at ease, for trade......Such a brilliant,well-thought out....''

But Roha was cut short by a contemptuous, menacing voice.

''And you're just as big abysmal gits!''

Roha and Amish froze as the men came striding into the room with their boss in the head.

They were cornered.........

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 22

It seemed like hours ago, that Roha and Amish had left her.Kyra was tensed, freaking out for her friends.

The police force was still quite a distance away and will need half an hour to reach at the minimum.

The wait seemed eternal. She prayed incessantly for her friends well-being.

Roha and Amish were panting, entirely drained. They didn't how long they had been walking.

The tunnel seemed to stretch endlessly, serpenting through the underground. The ancient air penetrated their very bones, freezing them.Their teeth chattered, the sound reverberating eerily.

At last the path winded upwards and after walking a few more metres, they could see the faint glimmer of light.

Their breath hitched and they increased their pace. The destination wasn't far!

Suddenly the tunnel came to an abrupt halt and they could see the source of light. A huge rock was seemed to have been moved out of its place revealing a chipped, old door.It was ajar.

They glanced at each other nervously, looking undecided.

''I thing he got in through this...I..I'll peer in.''Amish said fidgetedly.

''Ok!''Roha gulped, holding the can of pepper spray that she had brought with her aloft.

Amish hunched and peeped in through the crack.

''I think its some type of underground room. The coast is clear.Let's go!''He whispered, getting up.

They both took a deep, calming breath and entered the room slowly.

It was dimly lit and covered in dust.Huge cartons were thrown here and there and straw was strewn on the floor.

''How will we get outside this place?''Amish asked, looking at Roha who was running her finger on the low ceiling.

''Here's a trap door.I hope its the way out.''She said nervously.

They slightly lifted the lid up and Amish peered through the crevice.

He found himself peering at dingy room.Skeins of dirty cobweb hung from the ceiling and a huge, wasted chandelier.Moonlight sifted in the room through a broken window and was the only source of light. The room was deserted, just as forbiding.

Amish lifted himself up carefully and reached out for Roha, pulling her up.

They dusted themselves and looked around curiously.

''Where are w......''

But Amish was cut short by loud footsteps. With their hearts hammering fit to burst, they stared panic-stricken at the adjoining passage.

Someone was coming.....

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 21

Amish and Roha feared of having lost Pratap singh in the ancient grottoes, the man who knew the way through. But they were soon relieved.Apparently the men had shared the same worry and had blocked the other misleading ways with bis boulders.

They walked carefully on the slippery, rugged surface, their flash light cutting the prevalent darkness only a meter or two.

Long creepers hung from the rocky roof above and moss covered most of the surface, wherever water sipped through fissures.

A gust of cold wind seemed to be ensuing from somewhere deep within, chilling their spine.

''God!Its so cold.''Amish muttered, chafing his arm to keep warm.

''This is spooky!''Roha agreed nervously, eyeing the place apprehensively.

A sudden subtle noise stopped them in their tracks and the very next second Amish gagged Roha, stuffing his hand in her mouth.

''Shh Ro.Its nothing.''he whispered soothingly.

Roha stared aghast, trembling from head to toe as a huge snake slithered by just a few centimeters away.

''Come on,let's go!''Amish whispered as soon as the serpent vanished in gloom.

Roha was still rooted on the spot, looking petrified.

''Honestly girl!A man tried to drown you to death and you were as brave as a lion..now you're afraid of that snake who went away without any harm!''

Amish muttered exasperated,pulling Roha along.

They slipped and stumbled on the dicey, uneven floor. The path seemed to be getting narrower as they advanced.

All of a sudden an epiphany struck Roha like a bolt of lighting and she froze, clutching Amish's arm.

''What's wrong?''Amish asked bewildered.

''Ami,we're in those ancient tunnels that were used by the chieftains to thwart foriegn invasion....The nexus of discrete caves that are considered a perfectly brewed myth!''she hushed dazedly, astounded by her own discovery.

''What?''

''Yeah....no wonder Pratap singh was so agitated when we pestered him about these tunnels! These people are doing something very illegitimate and big and are using the grottoes to efficiently carry out their wrong deeds....''She frowned.

''We need to be extremely careful.Whosoever is the kingpin,he's one hell of a brainy man!''She said darkly.

''Wow!I mean just imagine the implications of this discovery!''Amish ejaculated ecstatically, not paying heed to Roha's words. He staring wondrously in the surrounding.

''Its nice all right!''Roha said dismissively.

''But we need to get to the bottom of this thing. We shouldn't waste any more time.It seems,we've a mission which is brimming with deadly secrets in our hands.''

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 20

Throughout the next day,Roha,Amish and Kyra stuck to Pratap singh like ants to sweet. They were determined to find proof and waited for a tiniest of folly on his part.

Kyra had already filled in her father-who was a reputed lawyer-with all the happenings- and who in turn had asked his friend,Commissioner Singhania to provide aid to the trio.Commissioner Singhania had sent an official request to the S.P  of the area to provide all possible help to nab the culprits. The police was probing the case thoroughly.

Disheartened not in the least by lack of any suspicious activity on Pratap singh's part, the trio followed him as he started for his house at night, where they got their first taste of success.Instead of going home,Pratap singh went towards the deserted Kalpa hills which they had visited just a few days ago.

Carefully climbing down the slopes,he inconspicously slid into the vale, sporadically throwing glances in the vicinity.

Roha,Amish and Kyra followed him surreptitiously, down the moonlit expanse, gasping for breath.

At last the man stopped on the outskirts of the thickets of primordial trees, silhouetted on the base of the hills. The night making it appear even more mysterious and ghostly.

To their utter astonishment, the man seconds later, disappeared in the gloom,as if he was swallowed by the very Earth itself.Stunned, the trio followed the suit and reached the place carefully.

The woods were silent and dark.Night birds cried shrilly, making them more fidgety.

''Where did he vanish?''Kyra asked apprehensively.

''I think he has gone through this.''Roha said quitely, pointing to a fissure, barely the size to allow entry of a grown man.

''What?He can't be....I mean he won't....guys its so scary looking!''she wailed,looking spooked.

''Shhh, don't make sound.....I'm going in there!''Roha said determinedly.

''Are you off your rockers? You'll enter this stupid place!''Kyra looked aghast.

''Be reasonable ky,we don't have any other option! We've got to catch that Pratap singh anyhow!''

''Ok!But you're not going alone.I'll come with you.''Amish said.

''But it will be dangerous!''

''Exactly!That's why you're not going alone and I don't wanna hear anything about it!''Amish whispered,ignoring Roha's protests.

''Kyra, you stay her...no listen!''he said forcefully as Kyra opened her mouth to argue.

''Someone needs to be here, otherwise police doesn't has a prayer to locate us!Just inform them OK!We'll be leaving our trail in there so that you can find us easily. This is the best option we've got now!''

''Ok guys, whatever you say,but please take care!''Kyra whispered, her eyes filled.

''Don't worry ky.We'll be back! We're hard nuts to crack!''Roha said trying to lighten up the mood.

''Lets go Ro or we'll lose him!''Amish hushed urgently.

Amish and Roha entered the narrow cavern, their elbows grazing on the rock.

The game had begin.........

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 19

''Phew!That was a close shave!''Amish muttered.

They were huddled together in the hotel room, having escaped quite unscathed, except for a few scratches and bruises.

''I shudder to think what would've happened to us,if Roha hadn't thought of sticking to door!.....We would've turned into a bloody pretzel by now beneath those books!''Kyra shuddered still very pale in face.

''You know what guys,I think an insider is involved in creating all this mess, someone who knows us quite well.''Roha said biting her lips.

''What makes you think so?''

''Look at the happenings guys!Someone came and wrote that horrible graffiti in our room, along with a dead rabbit...Well,the key was with me and I precisely remember locking the door. Moreover, there were no signs of forcible break-in!That could only mean that whosoever got in,had the duplicate key,the one that hotel administration keeps and you know it very well that the hotel staff has access to those.''

''You're right! Why didn't we ponder on this before?''

''And today Pratap uncle and a few hotel staff were the only ones who knew that we were going to the public library apart from our group,of course!''

''PRATAP SINGH!!''Kyra suddenly yelled, making them jump.

''What?''

''Guys Pratap singh is our man!!Did you know trhat he's one of the guides that this hotel provides for its tourists? In nutshell,he's one of the employees,so that means he'll definitely have access to those keys!''She explained.

''You might be right, but we can't accuse him, until we've proof.''Amish pointed out the glitch.

''So we'll find it!''

''Find What?''

''The proof!I think ky is right!Pratap singh is definitely a bit dodgy. From now on I'll keep an eye on him and I'll be damned if I don't dig something out!''Roha resolved obstinately.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 18

A deafening crash shook the ground followed by a stunned silence.Hundreds of books, numerous ballads, parodies, sagas and phrases preserved for decades were scattered around the room in a huge precarious piles, burdened under heavy book cases.Thick haze of ancient dust enveloped the room, covering everything -dead or living.

The premonitory looming silence was pierced by several loud sneezes.

''A....chooo guys are you a...chooo. OK?''Someone chocked.

Ac...hooo,A...chooo........

''Ye....ah!''

''Huh!''

Suddenly there were loud footsteps outside and moments later the door opened to glaring sunshine.

''Oh God!What the....''

Roha blinked in the blinding light to make out the appalled, thunderstruck features of the old librarian, who was looking like he was having aneumarysm.

''What did you do to this place, you little devils?''he shrieked, shaking his claw-like finger just under Roha's nose.

''Sir we didn't.....''Amish began, surfacing from pieces of broken lacquer and loose pages.

''Of course you did it!You ruined my beloved library! You ruthless, mediocre twerps!''he yelled.

Several loud shouts ensued from the corridor beyond.

''What was that noise?''

''What's going on here?''

''Was that an Earthquake?I swear the ground shook!''

Roha,Amish and Kyra were affixed in startled, unblinking gazes as more and more people crowded the place.

''C'mon children, get up!''Some of the onlookers came to their aid.

''They destroyed m.......my library.''The old man sobbed dryly.

''Don't be ridoculous Sukhwinderji! You too know that its impossible.''

''Yeah...they are just kids for crying out loud!''

''Even three fully grown men can't budge these bookcases for an inch!''

''Exactly!Its lucky they aren't hurt.They could've gotten killed!''

The crowd tried to reason out with the old man,but only to have dry cacophony from him,for all the effect they had.

Unperturbed from the surrounding chaos,Roha's mind raced. They had escaped another attempt to kill.It was time for desperate action, before innocent lives were put to danger.

I won't give up so easily!I will find what the hell is going on in this place.

She resolved determinedly,undeterred and stubborn.

Wednesday 22 May 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 17

''What exactly are you trying to search?''Kyra asked curiously as she watched Roha rifling through dog-eared,degenerated pages of grubby books.

''I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the local history!''Roha replied absentmindedly, her nose almost touching the book that she was going through.

The three of them were seated on shabby chairs around a chipped,dust-covered table.Dust-motes floated in the room tn swirling vortex as skeins of dirty cobwbs hung from the ceiling which was in utter disrepair. The room was bathed in a dull grey light making it even more spooky and morbid. With books stacked in shelves from floor to ceiling,it was the most dingy room one would ever have the misfortune to come across!

''But what benefit will it...''Amish's words were drowned by a bang as someone shut the door, cutting off the only source of light and ventilation the room had.

''Someone has locked us in!''Amish ejaculated in disbelief.

''But why will anyone do that?''Kyra spluttered looking lost.

Her query was instantly answered by a loud metallic grind which hurt their ears.As they looked up at the source of the noise their blood froze.

The bulky, old bookshelf was tilting of its own accord, precisely inclining to the place where they stood petrified. The door was bolted, shutting the only way out.......

Roha stood stupefied for a fraction of second then her brain started whizzing. She had to find a way out, more than that she had to save her friend. As she looked around, the solution struck her mind like a bolt of lightening. She was going to save her friends.........

Thursday 16 May 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 16

Unknown to Roha,Amish and Kyra, there were people who were facing the  murderer's wrath for failing to finish off Roha.

''I asked you to kill the girl, then how did she escape?''he growled from the depth of shadows.

''B..boss I tried my level best and she would've surely died if her friends hadn't gotten in the way!But just give me one more chance,I'll definitely take her out this time.''the man pleaded.

''I never give second chances.Letting that girl survive is a moot point. She has become a liability. That mediocre, poking girl will die and this time...I'll do the kill!''the monster in him purred in anticipation.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

''Guys I'm going to the local library.''Roha anounced on the breakfast table.

Fred made a gagging sound.

''What the hell are you going there for?''he looked like he was seriously dubious regarding Roha's sanity.

''To get acquainted with a bit of local colors, obviously!''Roha said rolling her eyes.

''Seems like she hit her head on a rock or something yesterday. She's all barmy!''

Mrs.D'souza cleared her throat,looking stern.

''Ms.Sharma you may go as long as I've your words that you won't.....eh stray around.''She said affixing Roha with piercing gaze.

''Of course ma'am.''Roha affirmed obsequiesently.

''Ro wait! We'll also accompany you.''said Amish getting up from his chair followed by Kyra.

Roha looked exasperated.Being concerned was one thing, but now her friends were babying her .

''But guys there's no need.I'll take care of myself.Besides its not like you two will enjoy. You'll be bored so what's the...''

''They both are right. What with yesterday's incident, you need to be looked after. Now hurry up!I shall be expecting you before lunch.''

Mrs.D'souza said authoritatively,effectively stopping refutes.

Tuesday 14 May 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 15

She sliced headlong through the surface of the  freezing water and then plunged deeper. She struggled to swim upwards but the icy water benumbed her.The rhythmic current tossed her around like a rag doll. Her lungs felt heavy and her body ached. She couldn't reach the surface of the stream.

Suddenly something slammed hard against her making her breath come out in bubbles.Immediately she was snared securely. She was pulled away deeper and deeper away from the surface and she knew she was about to die......

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roha woke up feeling so warm and sleepy that she didn't want to open her eyes, wanting to drop off again.

''When will she come round?''She heard Kyra's hushed voice. She sounded like she had very bad cold.

''Who knows?Hopefully in a few.''Amish whispered anxiously.

She slowly opened her eyes and blinked in the dim light that flooded the room. She was immediately greeted by fervently relieved exclaimations.

''Ro!''

Roha slowly sat up with the help of Amish and Kyra.

''How are you feeling?''Kyra demanded concernedly.

''I'm fine guys. Chill!''

''Chill!!Do you know how worried we were? What was the need to go that near the edge? You know what, you are worst than toddlers, even they can take better care of themselves. What if something had happened to you?''

''Ami,I didn't fall on my own.''she hesitated and then dropped the bomb.

''Someone pushed me off the edge.''

''What!''Her revelation rendered Amish and Kyra  horrorstruck and appalled.

''S...someone tried to kill you!''Kyra looked aghast.

''Did you see his face?''Amish asked sharply.

''No..I didn't but whosoever he was,he was pretty strong and agile.Quite like a body-builder and at least 6 ft. tall.''

''Who could it be?I mean its so strange! We don't even know anyone that well here to inspire that kind of animosity?''Kyra shuddered.

''Except there are people who could be  behind this. Those goons.''Amish said darkly.

''But we didn't even go prying again!''

''But I did!''Roha interjected.

''Yes it all fits!Yesterday I went to that old bridge and that phantom or whatever it was, attacked me.Today I was targeted again. This could very possibly mean that ,that old story is being used as a disguise to hide something big.But....what is it?''Roha said thoughfully.

''Whatever it is but one thing is clear.Someone is getting really desperate,so we are going to stick to you like glue, not even a single toe out of the line you're putting.''Amish said stubbornly, looking thoroughly determined.

Monday 13 May 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 14

'Ro!'someone screamed.Roha opened her eyes, but there was no one in front of her.The ghost of Sir Edmund Hathway had vanished in thin air!

'Ro are you Ok?'Amish yelled frantically.

'I..I am f..fine.'she replied shakily.

'But where did he go?'

'Who?'Kyra asked 'There is no one here beside us.'

'No,he was here,that old man...he....'

'Guys we can discuss this later.Right now we need to reach hotel as soon as possible or Mrs.D'souza will hamstring us.'Amish said solemnly, pulling Roha and Kyra along with him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Did you actually see that phantom of Sir Edmund Hathway?'Kyra asked for what would have been hundredth time in an hour.

'If you ask this one more time,I am surely gonna chuck this vase on you!'Roha warned irritably.

'I am sorry, but I simply can't grapple with the idea of a ghost haunting this town. What with those goons, its pretty much icing on top!'Kyra muttered warily, looking fearful.

'Don't be a dickhead Ky! How on earth is a decade old dead lunatic supposed to be roaming about the streets now?'

The recent incident had thawed Amish and Kyra out.Sometimes some strange or a highly dangerous situation-as in the case of Roha-can restore your friendship and rendezvous with the ghost of a nutter officer was one of those things.

'Exactly! There has got to be some logic,an explaination to it that we are unable to see!'

'But Ro....you saw the ghost and so have many others. How can so many people be mistaken?'

'Ky,Indian mentality  is marred by superstitious dogmas. Its steeped so deep that at times we fail to see the mundane practicality in such situations. But if you look at it prudently, you'll see that superstitions in the present age of science and technology is pretty oxymoronic.'

'S are you planning to go back there and do a bit of sleuthing?'Amish asked quitely.

'Don't give her ideas Ami!How thick will Roha have to be to go back there?'

'I'm neither going back there, nor leaving it.'She gritted her teeth.

'I'll be damned if I don't find out what the heck is going on here.'Roha resolved, her face just as determined and obstinate as her voice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoroughly drained and sleepy after night's adventure,Roha,Amish and Kyra trudged lazily behind their gushing classmates. They were going atop hill Ratna which enjoyed a great penchant of being the most picturesque one in Jalna and the words couldn't have been truer!

Nestled in the lap of lush green maze, its foot was washed by the gurgling stream, which was deepest at the place as compared to anywhere in Jalna. The scarlet great orb in the sky had illuminated it with purest of gold, adorning it magnificently. The sight literally rendered them breathless, entranced by its beauty.

Soon everyone took to feverishly clicking their cameras, impatient to capture the scenery.Roha slowly walked around, taking pictures to cherish the memories forever.Lost as she was, isolated by quite a distance from her friends, she didn't notice a creepy shadow sneak behind her.

Suddenly she was grabbed from behind and smothered. She struggled desperately to free herself, but she was no match to the man's power. The stranger lifted her as effortlessly as if she were a rag doll and pushed her off the edge. With a bloodcurdling shriek,Roha tumbled down,to hit deep, icy water below.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 13

Roha was tossing and turning in the bed,her mind a violent whirlwind of thought.Though she knew she should be relieved on being off the hook by informing the police yet she was constantly haunted by a hollow feeling in her stomach that told her something was amiss. She didn't simply seem to put a finger on it and the thought disturbed her.Her brain felt like a wrought sponge, its stuffings squeezed out.

Just as she was feeling drowsy, absolutely whacked, something very important from the night before struck her like a bolt of lightning. She jumped up on the bed,her heart beating feverishly due to her sudden, probable epiphany. The words resonated in her ears continously.

'That old crackpot is still doing rounds, letting us milk for its worth.'

'That old crackpot..........'

Though Roha knew that it was a mere possibility yet she was filled with a conviction. After a lot of pondering, she decided to take the risk, but this time alone.......

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was well beyond midnight.Darkness and silence embraced the town, nothing like the day time hustle-bustle.The stream passed by stealthily, reflecting the beauty of night sky in its blacks. The culvert was just as forbidding looking as ever. The woods beyond it queerly still-dead looking.

Roha gulped, clutching the flash light tightly in her sweaty palms-sense of de javu was overwhelming. She stepped on the ancient bridge cautiously. The rusted metal creaked with every step that she took, chilling her spine, making her question her own decision of coming alone.Suddenly a wolf howled in the distance, making her heart jump out of her skin.

She looked up horrified to see a great chestnut horse coming towards her majestically from the depth of the forest, and on it sat a man.He was tall and well-built and flaunted clothes that had been out of vogue at least for a decade. He wore blackest of scowls on his face which radiated tyranny and contempt.

Roha was benumbed at the spectacle in front of her.Her throat was dry and her limbs were paralysed due to fear. She couldn't move a single muscle, not even to blink.

The old curled his lips in a lone grimace, showing his mottled teeth. He raised his claw-like hand to attack.

Roha squeezed her eyes tightly shut, shuddering madly, thinking she was about to die.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 12

'H..how did you know?'Roha spluttered.

'Ms.sharma, you are forgetting that you are talking to a woman who has handled hundreds of whacky pranksters for past 15 years.'

She sighed dramatically, nodding towards Fred who was now scating a couple of girls with an insect.

'Er..right.'Roha muttered awkwardly,feeling stupid.

Taking a deep breath, she narrated the entire incident to Mrs.D'souza with occassional helps from Amish and Kyra.

'Well..I must say though what you all did was very irresponsible as it may have landed you in life threatening trouble, still there are not many teens who are gallant enough in face of such adversitries.'she finally said, breaking a long pause, but added sharply at the gleeful look onht their faces.

'But of course that doesn't mean that I have given you license to fool around at night.I'll report the matter in local police station, but before that I want to have your firm words that you people won't go roaming about in nights or be ready to face the consequences.'

Roha,Amish and Kyra nodded obsequiently, relieved on getting such paltry scoldings.

Soon the sub-inspector,Mr.Brijesh Chauhan arrived. He was a beefy man with barely any neck and a moustache so bushy that it gave the troll-like goons of old hindi movies,a run for their money. His pig like eyes were fixed unblinkingly on the cadaver of the dead rabbit as he circled around it.

'Kids..its nothing to worry about.Just a sick joke that's all!'he boomed jovially, like Father Christmas giving desired gifts to children.

'What! We've got this horrible threat with this revolting corpse which some mad delinquent has sent us,who might even be planning to finish us off at this moment and you are saying its a mere joke.'Amish fumed, looking outraged.

'So you will tell me what's right and wrong?Besides I have served in this town for years and never got a single whiff of these strangers as you told me.Then why should I believe you?'

'Please officer.I apologise on his part. Its just that they are frightened. Please don't be offended!'Mrs.D'souza pleaded, glaring at Amish.

'OK!I'll look in the matter and do the needful.'

He paused and then in a sneering, sickly smooth voice.

'By the way,if I were in your place,I'd look after these children. You know roaming about in the dead of night can prove to be dangerous.

'Uh..of course officer.I'll take care.'Mrs.D'souza flushed.

'Good night!'The man went out of the room, giving a smirk.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As soon as sub-inspector,Brijesh chauhan stepped out of the hotel lobby,he dialled a number.

'Hello!'

'Yeah they called me.'

'Don't worry!I've nailed their teacher. That old hag will get them grounded for good.'

He leered evilly and disconnected the call, slouching off in the dark.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 11

'In the wake of this...threat what should be our next step?'mused Roha talking more to herself than anybody else.

She was propped up in the middle of the bed while Amish and Kyra  occupied pouffes, sitting as far from each other as possible, leaving a wide space for that hideous graffiti even as the dead rabbit hung ominously above their heads.

Roha had hoped that maybe the present scenario will knock some senses in her friends, but she was proved wrong.Amish and Kyra were perceptibly standoffish towards each other, spasmodically shooting disdainful looks at the other when they thought Roha wasn't looking.

'I don't know, but these people certainly have got an eyeful of us and may cause harm if we go prying.'Kyra said uncertainly.

'Shall we report the matter to local police ?'Amish suggested.

'Hmmm..I think that's the best option we have. But first we need to tell Mrs.D'souza everything-including yesterday's misadventure.'

'What will we do that for?'Amish looked thunderstruck.

'Do you want her to eat us alive?'Kyra demanded, looking at Roha as if she were insane.

'Guys try to understand my point.Even if we directly approach the authorities,Mrs.D'souza will come to know about it and then we will be in a graver trouble.Besides if we tell her the truth, she may even prove to be helpful.'Roha said reasonably.

Kyra and Amish stared at her and she could see her logic working on them.

'OK!But who will tie the bell around the cat's neck?'

'I think you should do it Ro as you are her favourite student. That's the best shot at damage control that we have. We'll accompany you of course!'Kyra said nervously.

Roha took a deep breath, gathering her courage.

'Alright, let's go!She must be in the garden with others.'

'NOW!' a startled chorus rang in the room.

'So when? The sooner we get through it,the better!'

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The trio strolled in the garden, amidst their chattering classmates, who were lolling around in twos and threes.

'Hey book worm! How many poor books did you feast on today?'

Fred joked to general sniggering, which was studiously ignored by Roha.

Mrs.D'souza was sitting in a secluded corner, with a book in her hand.Kyra and Amish practically hid behind Roha as she looked up,sensing their presence.

'Yes dears?'

'Ma'am actually we've g..got something important.. to tell you.'Roha began nervously.

'Am I about to find out what three of you were doing when you were supposed to be in your bed last night?'

Her solemn question shocked the trio into silence.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 10

A truck rolled to stop.Roha,Amish and Kyra waited with bated breath as a rota of men descended from it and several others detached themselves from surrounding gloom.

''Did you bring the catch?''

''Of course! These babies will yield fortune for us.He will be pleased.''

Good, you'll be rewarded beyond your expectations.''

''I hope so. Anything new?''

''No..much the same.People here are just as big a fool as ever.''

''That old crackpot is still doing round, letting us milk for its worth.''

The goons laughed eerily sending chills down the spine.

They were brought up short by a sudden scream.Kyra leapt out of the bushes, wildly brushing her jacket.

''Ky!''Roha and Amish screamed, trying top pull her back, but it was too late. They were already spotted.

''Catch them!''one of the goons roared, taking out his gun.

''Guys run!''Roha screamed, seeing a posse of men running towards them.

There were several loud bangs and something whizzed past Roha's head, missing her by inches.

''Don't let them escape!''

''Round them up!''

But Roha,Amish and Kyra had already disappeared in the blacks of forest.

''Where did they go?''

''Boss will kill us!''the men looked at each other in bewilderment and anxiety.

''Don't worry''came a deadly voice from the back.

''I know who they were.Roha sharma,I will clip your wings down.''

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inside the forest Roha,Amish and Kyra ran for their dear lives, slipping and stumbling in the dark, not daring to use their flash lights lest they were caught.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as the Sun touched the horizon,Roha woke up,sleep deprived and puffy eyed after a disturbed night's sleep.Somehow her plans for last night had gone horribly awry, leaving its brunt in considerable amounts.

Kyra and Amish had a heated row after their daring escape. They both had stood ten feet apart and yelled themselves hoarse on each other, playing deaf to her desperate pleas.Though she knew that Amish was right as Kyra was responsible for the last night's gaffe, yet he couldn't really blame her knowing that Kyra had great fear of darkness and wild animals, which literally verged on phobia.Yet she couldn't help it.She knew it very well that she was in for a long day, tring to mollify her friends and she wasn't exactly wrong.

Kyra and Amish cold-shouldered each other, pretending as if the other didn't exist.Roha sat between them, making forced conversation, attempting to thaw them out but to no avail. Her friends were just as obstinate as ever. She had never felt so down and nothing not even the balme weather could perk her up.She entered the hotel after their tiring excursion, relieved to have the draining day towards its end,not knowing even in slightest that a nightmare awaited her.

She entered her room to find Kyra sweating as shivering as if in a fit.

''What's wrong?''she asked worriedly.

But instead of giving a response,Kyra rushed to the washrooms, puking her guts out.

''Ky!''Roha started behind Kyra only to come face to face with a hideous sight.

A dead rabbit was suspended in the middle of the room from the ornate chandelier-its neck was half slit, turning its fur scarlet and dripping blood over that horrible graffiti.

'DON'T POKE YOUR NOSE,OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE THE NEXT!'

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 9

''What do you think Ro?''Amish enquired.

It was dusk.Sun was setting in the horizon, throwing huge shadows across the room.Roha was standing near the bay windows, gazing absent mindedly into the space.

''Well...I don't know what to make of it.But I'd wager something pretty big is going on here.''she began slowly.

''By the sound of it,theu'd k..killed someone.''Kyra said uncomfortably, looking fearful.

''So where does it takes us?I mean what do we do now?''

''We can't leave the matter where it is.''Amish said.

''Shall we go and report this to Mrs.D'souza and let her deal with it?''

''Are you nuts?''Amish asked incredulously. ''Roha will give up her books for good, before Mrs.D'souza believes even a single word that we utter.''

''So it comes down to this.Doesn't it?''Roha turned, her eyes glittering.

''What do you mean?''Amish frowned.

''I'll go to that old temple tonight and try to find out what's going on.''

''Have you lost your marbles?''Kyra looked aghast. ''Those people are dangerous!''

''I know it Ky.But we .really can't put a sock in it and go about our business.Something pretty fishy is going on here, probably affecting several innocent lives! They are killers. Its not safe for people to have such kind of low lives out and about. They need to be punished and I'll be damned if I don't see to it.''she spoke firmly.

Kyra and Amish stared awestruck at their feisty friend, knowing she won't give up until she thoroughly looked into the matter.

''How will we go out?''Amish asked, breaking the silence.

''We?''

''Of course Ro!You really didn't think we'll let you go alone!''Kyra said indignantly.

''But..''

''No buts!I'll meet you two tonight at 11:30 and then we'll set off.''Amish said firmly, putting an effective end to their arguments.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

''They should be here at any moment now.Its going to be 12.''Amish said tensely, glancing at his watch.

Roha,Amish and Kyra were hidden in thick bushes on the outskirts of the surrounding forest.A clear night's sky was flaunting all its glory, without a trace of cloud.

The ancient temple was silhouetted at the foot of Mani hill, casting a garagantuan shadow in the moonlight.A pristine silence wrapped the place, occassionaly dispelled by jingling of temple bells or cries of night birds.

''They should come before a wild animal or a reptile provides us with free tickets to heaven.''Kyra said nervously glancing around in pitch black.

''Don't worry Ky.They won't want to pop their clogs by having you in their bowels.''

''You..''

''Cool it guys and listen!''Roha said impatiently, straining to hear a faint sound. It was the revving of a huge vehicle

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 8

The glorious dawn chased the blemishes of the nightmare away from Roha's mind. After having a hearty breakfast of mouth-watering,local delicacies, the group set out again  to unravel the untainted serenity of Jalna.

They hiked for hours,Forest spread around them in a vast labyrinth of ancient trees as a brighter jade filtered through the thick canopies,Air was cool.gilded and refreshing.Just as the Sun rose in its halo, illuminating the hill top in a warm, buttery haze, they stepped out of the green maze.

Enticing wafts of multi-hued flowers hailed them jovially.A meadow straight out of the fairy tales where you would expect a unicorn to stop by and nibble at bushes or Snow white to walk in any time.

''This is the Kalpa hill range,''The guide offered like a father bragging about his newborn child.

''Several tourists visit Jalna every year just to see this place. It is said that surrounding hills have secret grottoes, entrance to well-laid out nexus that were used by our ancestors to thwart the enemy forces.''

''So can we go and see those passages please?''ejaculated Kyra looking all worked up.

''No we can't because no one knows where those tunnels are or rather to be precise whether they exist or not-myth in my opinion,''

''But there must be some base to it.I mean underground caverns dug out in the bowels of the Earth is quite ommon in our country and for that matter throughout the world. So its quite plausible.''

''My dear child you're talking about something which isn't tangible.Had it been, then it 'd have been discovered long back by countless historians and archaeologists who came here for the same-people who had seen much more grays than you.''retorted Pratap singh who for some unknown reason looked agitated.

''Just enjoy the weather instead of indulging your mind in useless crap.''with that he immediately scurried off,

Roha frowned''Don't you think he was acting a bit strange?''

''Don't be ridiculous Ro!The man just got irritated by your endless questions, quite usual occurence.Thats all.''

''But..''

''You literally chuck to chuck those mystery novels out.You are starting to round on people.''Amish groaned.

''Stop it guys!Lets have some fun.''gushed Kyra, dragging her friends along with her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not too far from the ebullient gathering, two men were meeting surreptitiously in the gloomy shroud of a cluster of trees.

''When is it coming?''the taller one enquired gruffly.

''Tonight at 12.Tell me the place.''replied the other in a low voice.

''Near the ruins of that old temple.I'll be there, but be vigilant. One more blunder and we'll be done for.Our corpses will rot on the forest floor just like his.''he shuddered.

''When he came to know, his fury was terrible to behold. He won't tolerate even slightest of slip.''

''I know!Don't worry it will be here and no one will know the better.''

Both the men slouched off stealthily in different directions, intent on avoiding detection.

Unnoticed went by them, the presence of three more persons, who had heard every word uttered and now stood rooted on the spot-sheer alarm and bewilderment on their faces.

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 7

She was in a familiar place. The rusted joints rankled loudly, owing to the swishing wind-piercing the omnipresent silence. The trees swayed eerily, nightfall making them as enigmatic as they were ghastly. The stream constantly struck the pebbles,as it slinked beneath, adorned with the silvery reflection of the moon, which enchanted her.

''I knew you would come.''hissed an ancient ,cold voice as if the Earth herself yielded those words.

She turned around but there was no living soul whatsoever.

''I'll take you too.''It seemed that the wind itself was the carrier of that disembodied voice.

''I'll avenge.''It was almost a whisper.

She was being sucked ,pushed into an abyss, incapacitated against invisible cords. She thrashed with, yet strangely couldn't move a muscle, not even to blink.

''I shall have my revenge.''the billowing wind whispered, buffeting her like a rag doll. She couldn't breath, something was chocking her, blocking her mouth and nose....

''Ahhh..''Roha sat up on her bed with a startled gasp. She looked around groggily for her attacker only to find herself in the hotel room.

Moon was sifting through the bay windows, dancing on the carpeted floor, even as millions of stars winked at her merrily.

She cussed her subconscious for dredging the tale up,yet howsoever hard she tried to pacify herself, she couldn't get rid of that annoyingly persistent premonition.

Thoroughly ,she put on her ear phone, concentrating with every fiber on each note. The exercise succeeded as the soft song soothed her frayed nerves like a lullaby.Soon she fell into a peaceful slumber.

Saturday 27 April 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART 6

Mrs.D'souza crossed the length of the garden quickly and towered over them, her spectacles glinting fufiously, giving a foreboding .

''Having a cozy, little soiree, are we?''Trying to engage your tiny, little brains in codswallop!''her voice was dangerously soft.

''Its really a nice change to see the replacement of that deadpan look, which you all specifically save for classes.STUPIDS!Get inside for supper this instant and woe betide you if I ever found any one of you paying attention to such rubbish.OFF TO DINNER NOW!!'' she shrieked.

Cowering they all scuttled away, leaving the poor guide at Mrs.D'souza's mercy.Dinner was a silent affair and soon everyone called it a day, gladly seeking an escape from 'The Hitler's' jaundiced glare.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a few kms away, several men were meeting discretely in a desolate, macabre room.Moonlight filtering through the broken window was the only swathe of light, cutting the darkness.

''So...we've our guest-of-honour here''ensued a commanding.cold voice from the unpredictable gloom.

The man whimpered in anguish and fear as others laughed sickly at his plight.

''I am sorry...I didn't mean to.Please don't kill me.I have served you loyaly for so many years.Atleast for that sake leave me.I promise to never to repeat the blunder again....Please have some mercy.'' he fell on the ground at his feet.

The Murderer stood up,a sense of cruel loathing filled him.

''I never give a second chance. You shall pay.''he pulled the trigger of his gun and the man slumped on the floor soundlessly with a mundane finality.

''I condole his death.'' he rasped ,his voice now possessed with a delinquent, savage glee.

''Throw him away and let the animals have their gala time.''

He watched, satisfied as his men picked the limp corpse from the ground and marched off.Murders were always invigorating for him-an essential nourishment for him - a deadly killing machine , lethal and potent, complemented by a powerful physique. He took pride in ruthlessly squishing the necks of his troublesome allies and foes alike.

Nobody gets to me.I am invincible, the unproclaimed Emperor of this dark world.

He thought smugly. He turned to his men.

''Next consignment will be here shortly in a day or two so be prepared.Off you go now and remember the protocol.''he dismissed them.

As the last man slinked out of the room, closing the door behind him,he sauntered -pulling nexus of cobwebs-to his catacomb like domain, brimming with unfathomable secrets.

The murderer entered the anteroom, serpenting between numerous crates. His fingers impatiently prodded the alcove, pushing it gently. The grubby,dust-covered wall gave way with a soft mettallic clank, that richocheted in the room,to reveal a vault-like chamber.

The Murderer padded in the chamber like a panther anticipating a large, juicy meal and ran a reverent fingure on his most cherished baubles,a manic glint in his eyes,

''I rotted in purgatory for years, you are my reward.''

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART5

''What do you mean?''Roha demanded.

Pratap singh flushed and gave an impish look'

''Probably said more...don't know what I was thinking.....should get going.''he mumbled.desperate to avoid the onslaught.

''Wait''

''You can't go.First tell us what did you mean.''

''Exactly!''

Several voices cajoled him in one go,nearly flattening him to the ground. So Pratap Singh once again picked up his story from where he had left it to avoid being slaughtered by the curious, whacky kids of course!

''Well after the death of Hathway, there were mysterious appearances of a horse rider on that bridge at night.Several people claimed that it was Hathway who had come to seek revenge of his murder, but no one was sure as everyone had seen the person from quite a distance. Then one morning,a local Raja came dashing in the town, looking absolutely spooked. He ran like a maniac and demolished half of the market.Nobody could control him.He kept on yelling things like

'He has come.'

'Hathway will wipe this town of habitation.'

After wreaking havoc for quite a long time,he returned back to those forests crossing the river.People searched for him for hours yet everything was in vain. The next morning,a woman came running telling everyone who would hear that a bloodied corpse lay on the bridge.Everyone rushed to the spot to find Raja's mutilated body lying spread-eagled akin to the way Hathway's was found.

Years have passed after that incident which changed our lives forever and we've lost several people due to that ghost.Ther won't be a single family in this town who hadn't lost their loved ones to it.''he sighed, lapsing into a poignant silence.

''EXCELLENT!'' came a booming, gruff voice, making several people jump a foot in air and clutch each other in a dead grip.

Tuesday 23 April 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART4

''Its not good to be here at this time of the night.Lets go''

''But uncle..''

''Lets move.''moaned the aging guide in a quivering voice laced with anxiety and fear.He seemed to be fighting a serious impulse to dash in the other direction  as fast as his legs would support him.But apparently his erratic reactions kindled everyone's curiosity who began to dig him for further information.

''Ok....Ok.''he said wiping his forehead.

''I'll tell you everything. But please move from here.''he nearly grovelled.Since the poor man looked like he was going to have a massive heart attack,so everyone agreed.

As soon as the group entered the Hotel premise, they dragged the poor man to the garden, sitting around him in a circle.

''Now tell us what was that?''Saima queried to general approbation.

''That was the Hathway's bridge.''began the guide reluctantly.

''During the time of colonial rule, there lived an officer named Sir Edmund Hathway. He loved this place and spent his free time here in the lap of nature. He lived on that side of the stream in a huge mansion. It was considered one of the most royal building of its time.Money was spent like water on it.

But akin to those 'white skin' Hathway too treated natives like muck on his shoes. He was a sadist, torturing people without any reason in the most gruelling condition imaginable was an inseparable part of his tedious routine. In fact its said  that he made the fiery pits of Hades look very welcoming and hospitable.Hundreds succumbed to his tyranny, which gradualy filled people with fury. Then one day,in a fit of rage on some petty issue he brutaly whipped a boy,who later died due to his injuries. The people had had enough. The next morning his bloodied corpse was found on the bridge,on the very same spot where he had whipped that innocent boy.Though rumours were afloat that o group of natives had killed him, nothing was ever found. The enquiry was closed concluding that he was attacked by some wild animal.Since Hathway loved this place,he was laid to rest in the backyard of his house. His family left for England to never to return back. That was the end of his tyranny and everything related to him.His house is in ruins now.''

The guide concluded staring around impressively at his keen listeners. As soon as he made to get up ,Rachna dropped the bomb .

''Can we go there tomorrow?I wanna see his mansion.I have never been to a place like that ever.please?''

BOOM.That was louder that Hiroshima and Nagasaki put together.

''NO!''yelled the frightened guide looking scared out of hell.

''Don't ever go near that dratted bridge even with a 10ft. long bamboo stick, not if you want to die a very painful death.''

His ominous outburst was greeted by a startled silence as every face once again got glued to his pale.panic-stricken one.

Saturday 20 April 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART3

After taking a nap,the group set out to explore the town. They had a gala time, despite the constant string of reprimands from Mrs.D'souza.They hired a local guide,Pratap Singh who filled them about the town and its residents.

The natives had successfully resisted the domination of princely states for centuries under the leadership of valient, local chieftains until the advent of the British who snatched the territory. After that it became one of the favourite destination of colonial officers for leisure. There were several impeccably sculpted old temples and edifices, some even dating back to nine centuries. Then there was the local market, which had every imaginable sort of assortment-absolutely fascinating. The varied hues that the place provided ,despite its size, rendered them wishing for eight eyes to be able to look in every direction, lest anything should miss.

The time slinked by and sooner than they had liked, the sun crossed the horizon gradualy giving way to the velvety darkness.Twilight in Jalna was even more glorious as soft moonlight bathed every surface, endowing a silvery sheen.Laughing and pulling each other's leg, they started for the hotel, enjoying the refreshing,pollution-free breeze. As they passed by the merrily gurgling stream,a subtle yet wierd grunting CLANK attracted Roha's attention. She stopped in her track gazing fixedly at a large, obscure shadow across the stream leading to thick vegetation on the other bank.Though the thing was almost discernible in the prevailing darkness, yet something about it gave her shiver. She edged closer, trying to have a better look at the object.

''Ro,what are you doing there?''Amish's voice brought her back to reality. She turned to see her friends standing a good two meter away.

''Umm...nothing.Pratap uncle, what's that?''she asked pointing at the shadow.

The guide's face blanched and a teeniest squeak of fright left him.

''That's nothing my dear child. You come here. Its not good to be

Friday 19 April 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART2

A terrified scream put an end to feverishly clicking cameras.Everyone looked around to see Kyra frozen with a foot dangling in mid-air,an expression of utter terror on her face.

"What's wrong?"

"Why did you scream?"

"What's going on?''

As everyone closed in around her,she was bombarded with questions.

"Silence!"Mrs.D'souza's voice whipped in the frenzy silencing everyone.

''Back off.Now Ms.Gupta why did you scream?''

''Th..that cham....chaemeleon.It jumped on my feet..and...''

That was the cue to guffaws.Everyone rolled around laughing.Well you would if you saw Kyra who looked like she was about to be axed by a madman.

''Ms.Gupta don't be a dunderhead. You're atleast 20 times the size of that poor creature. Now eveyone move and please maintain the decorum.''

Amish and Roha moved to Kyra who looked in serious need of a pit to disappear in.

''Let's go Ky.''Roha said soothingly. She was very well aware of her best friend's repulsion and fear for reptiles. However Amish found it hilarious.

''Yeah...let's remove you from that monster's vicinity, lest he gobbles you up.''

Amish's face was read, trying to hold back his laughter.Roha shot a disdainful warning look at him.You need to keep up with your friends-however childish they may be for friendship's sake.

''Very funny isn't it?You would've known how horrible it feels if you had reached out for your favourite toy and instead found a disgusting, scaly lizard on your hand.''

Kyra shushed her as they made their way towards the hotel. The building was set in a sprawling meadow which was shaded by wide sweeps of huge trees.A grand porch was wrapped around the entrance, giving it a royal look. The insides were even more impressive. The walls were wood-panelled and adorned with beautiful paintings.Plush carpets covered the floor while cozy pouffe and sofa's occupied the place as a massive ornated wooden staircase led to the upper stories. No wonder tis was one of the most sought after hotels of Jalna.

Tuesday 16 April 2013

MIDNIGHT RIDER PART1

A canary yellow bus rolled to a stop in the premise of Blue Bell hotel in the picturesque town of Jalna and out erupted enthusiastic cheers and applause.

Roha Sharma was stirred from her slumber by her friends.

"Oi!Wake up!"

"C'mon Ro we've reached!"

Rubbing sleep from her eyes she looked up to see her friends clustered around her.

"Beware, alert Kumbhkaran's great,great,great.....granddaughter, Your Highness Roha sharma has finally decided to grace our humble party with her esteemed wide-awake presence."said Fred fernandez, her robustly built, stout classmate with a dramatic bow.

"Bit rich coming from you, isn't it?The guy who considers every minute which he doesn't spends crashing around on the quest of his beauty sleep as a sheer waste of precious time." Roha mocked curtly.

"Oh well...I don't wear my eyes on grubby books, because I don't fancy strutting around the entire place with big dark circles ,looking like that freaking vampire Edward Cullen of Twilight.Unlike some great personalities round here,of course!"

Roha opened her mouth furiously-it was a common knowledge that she had long developed a soft spot for Edward Cullen-so promptly she was cut short by Snigdha who could see the oncoming storm.

"Guys chillax! Enough demonstration of World War 3 for today.Save something for tommorrow."

"Yeah...let's get down before that Hitler comes here.Honestly I won't put it past her to not to drop us lines even though we've come to have fun here."sighed Vivian in plight. And as if she heard him,the very next second Mrs.D'souza stuck her head inside.

"Children are you planning to spend the entire trip on this bus eh?OUT NOW!"

"Well there the siren blares."muttered Vivian as everyone hurriedly filed out of the bus.Mrs.D'souza was well known for her nasty temper. She was a strict disciplinarian and loathed what she called 'tomfoolery'.Students lived in mortal dread of hers and no one, not even her collegues dared to cross her.

As they alighted from the bus, they were struck by the naked beauty of the place.Green blanket hid the brown of Earth for miles, which were interspersed by multihued blossoms

INTRUDER PART3

I squared my shoulders and with my best prayer to heavens,I lunged forward to give the stranger a heavy blow on his head. But to my immense astonishment, the person toppled off without so much as an OUCH let alone a shriek of agony. That was strange as I had put as much power as I was capable of in that blow.

But I didn't wait to ponder that fact and charged forward again with my hands balled up into fists for the first punch and again to my great astonishment, his face yielded beneath my fist.WHAT THE RUDDY HELL WAS HAPPENING?

At that precise moment lights flickered on and I found myself staring at my brother's life-size teddy bear.Mr.Frosty!For the teeniest part of a second I stared nonplussed at the russet brown teddy and then with a vehement exclaimation,I extricated myself from the floor.Apparently my brother had a knack of leaving his toys here and there.Usually his deeds irritated me to death but today he had scared me to death!HOW ON EARTH SOMEONE SO SMALL CAN BE SO AWEFULLY IRRITATING?I kicked Mr.Frosty aside and stalked off to the kitchen in great dudgeon.I will should have a few words with my stupid brother. After all he had nearly given me a heart attack!

I drank atleast a gallon of water, still my throat was dry.I made my way out to the balcony.I hadn't noticed in all my agitation that the violent storm was replaced by gentle breeze.I let the light drizzle wash away the beads of perspiration.Gradualy the swirling haze calmed my frayed nerves and substitiuted my anger with exasperation and amusement at my own hilarious attitude.I shook my head sadly at my out of control, wild imagination.Who knows perhaps thes are symptoms of an impending mania?Well I always thought that there was something seriously wrong with my mind so it shouldn't be surprising really.

I wondered idly whether I would tell my family and friends about my craziness but thought better of it.I didn't think I would be able to stand their guffaws and howls of laughter at my pigheadedness.Though confronting my brother and giving him hell felt like an intriguing idea.Oh well!I was still a bit petulant. But tonight's incidence has  definitely scared the living daylight out of me.

INTRUDER PART2

I turned around and saw shards of a flower vase, apparently someone had left the window open.I hurried carefuly towards the window to shut it,muttering under my breath. The violent atmosphere was sending my imagination into high drive.I always had fear for darkness since my childhood.Whenever it went dark,I always felt like shadows are lurking in the corner, ready to pounce on me as soon as my back was turned. Now alsp that familiar de javu was nagging me.Absolutely ludricous!

Suddenly a streak of lightning illuminated the entire hallway, including a person who was standing near the door to the kitchen.I stifled a scream by stuffing my fist in my mouth. My honest blood froze.I don't think I had ever been so scared in my entire life as I was now.I had absolutely no experience with burglars or other low lives of the society, and here I was trapped in a desperate situation and nowhere to run for help.I cursed my fate which seems to have put a permanent crosshair on me as its prime target. If anyone could bottle my luck then there won't be any need for nuclear bombs. It would be sufficient. It felt like I was smacked straight in purgatory.Chicken through and through!

Though I was scared stiff,I eventually rallied up.Although I was shaking in every limb with terror,I grabbed the nearest ,heavy looking show piece tightly in my hands and titoed across the hallway. As adrenaline coursed through my veins,I tried to ease my breath without any considerable success and hoping beyond hope that I won't loose my mind as I always do in desperate situations.I tried to remember some self-defence moves.Smashing his nose in his brain seemed like an appealing idea.

INTRUDER PART1

INTRUDER

The Heaven was scowling, wind was howling and thunderclouds were raging. It was only twilight, but darkness outside made it appear as if it was well beyond midnight.I was sitting alone in the living room of my house, reading my favourite novel as my mum and dad had gone to visit a family friend.Even though it was me who had insisted that I should be left alone as I wanted to savour a few blissful hours of peace which -I so rarely get thanks to my little brother-I was regretting my decision with every passing minute. Each time when the thunderbolt wreaked havoc on my eardrums,a chill ran down my spine.Cold sweat dewed the nape of my neck, even though the weather was considerably cold. The sound of the raindrops on the roof was making me increasingly restless. But the worst was still to come.

Suddenly, lights went out and I let out a cry of shock and fear.My book fell on the floor with a dull thud.I so very badly wanted to kick myself for asking my parents to not to take me with them, but I was  rooted on the spot, unable to move a single muscle, even to blink. Finally, after what definitely seemed like an eternity ,I managed to move.I got up and made my way through velvety  darkness towards the drawers where mu mum kept torch.Twice I tripped over my own feet.Darkness was seeming to press on me and I felt claustrophobia creeping on me.I was halfway down the hall when I heard a deafening CRASH , making me shriek in terror and send my heart into frenzied palpitations.
